Available now: App Inventor 2: Databases and Files
I have finished writing App Inventor 2: Databases and Files, a new e-book providing step-by-step guides to using TinyDB, TinyWebDB, Fusion Tables and Data Files in Android App Inventor programs, including sharing data with spreadsheets.
All that remains is final editing and to read the entire book several times (!!)
In this new tittle, I provide detailed instructions for choosing which database is right for your application, and how to set up and use each type of database.
TinyWebDB requires a cloud-based server running the TinyWebDB engine – I show you how to set this up – for free! TinyWebDB stores your data in the Internet cloud – where it may be shared with other users too.
I then show several application scenarios of ways to use TinyWebDB.
I provide a step-by-step guide to setting up Fusion Tables, a cloud-based database system that runs in the Google network. For small to modest applications, you can use Fusion Tables for free and take advantage of powerful search features. Fusion Tables support much of the Structured Query Language (SQL) – if you have used database programs before, you can leverage your SQL knowledge to create, search and retrieve, and update Fusion Table data.
This title, Volume 3, in my series of App Inventor Guides, is the longest and best yet. If your apps need to store data – on the device or in the cloud – this title will get you up and running quickly, saving you a lot of time.
I do not have a precise release date yet but it will be available hopefully by September 1.
